Anatoliy Sumar was an artist and architect of the 1960s generation. His professional practice encompassed painting, illustrating children’s books, toy design, and a wide range of work within the field of technical aesthetics, which was in high demand at the time. The main body of Sumar's paintings dates from 1957 to 1963, during which he produced around 50 works. A significant number of these are stylised landscapes of Kyiv’s historic centre, rendered in the artist’s distinctive style.
As part of the Cult of Kyiv festival, The Naked Room gallery, in collaboration with the Maly Theatre and the artist’s family, will present the 1959 painting Lenina Street, which depicts a beloved neighbourhood of the old city—preserved for us through Sumar’s eyes.
