The Naked Room presents a solo booth by Lucy Ivanova, one of the key painters in Ukraine today. The series entitled “The Third Son” was made during her residency in the medieval village of Fontecchio which was heavily destroyed by an earthquake in 2009. There she explored local traditions, architecture, society and stories behind it all and discovered some interesting facts about the monastery and life around it.
The idea of this series discloses local principles of how men became monks. It was always the destiny of the third son of a wealthy aristocracy in order to avoid rivalry for legacy among heirs. All the heritage was given to the first one, the second was sent to military service, while the third one was given to one of the religious orders. Thus Lucy created a contemporary iconostasis in honour of a boy who was “lucky” to be born the third.
